The Attwater's prairie chicken (Tympanuchus cupido attwateri) once numbered about 1 million individuals. This species is currently endangered with less than 25 individuals inhabiting the coastal prairies of Texas. In order to help prevent extinction of this species, captive-breeding techniques are being developed. To learn more about this program, visit our SURF website.
